The Actuarial Science Club (ASC) at Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) organised a successful career path talk titled “Charting Your Career Path: Insights into Actuarial Science and Beyond” in collaboration with Allianz Malaysia on 15th April 2024.

The event provided students with valuable insights into the actuarial profession and career opportunities within Allianz Malaysia.

APU 2 (Charting Your Career Path, Insights into Actuarial Science and Beyond)

The event commenced with introductions of the esteemed speakers and Assoc Prof Dr Rajasegeran Ramasamy, Head of the School of Mathematics, Actuarial and Quantitative Studies (SoMAQS), presented tokens of appreciation and certificates to the Allianz team in recognition of their participation and support.

Note: Students who do not have a Credit in Additional Mathematics in SPM/O-Level/IGCSE but have an acceptable achievement in Mathematics related subjects during the Foundation which may be equivalent to SPM/O-Level/IGCSE Additional Mathematics, can be accepted into Degree Programmes. Students can be given preferential entry for ICT related subject in SPM/O-Level/ IGCSE.

Any qualification that APU accepts as equivalent to the above. 

The above entry requirements may differ for specific programmes based on the latest programme standards published by Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA). The qualification and entry requirements for the programmes will be determined based on the "Comparison List of Equivalency of International Qualifications with SPM (O-Levels equivalent) and STPM (A-Levels equivalent)" published by Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA).  

Ms Yeoh Shu Hui, Head of the Actuarial Centre of Competence at Allianz Life Insurance Malaysia, led the first session by discussing career paths for actuaries.

She emphasised the evolving landscape of actuarial roles, particularly in product development and risk management, citing the impact of International Financial Reporting Standard (IFRS 17) on job opportunities for actuaries.

APU 3 (Charting Your Career Path, Insights into Actuarial Science and Beyond)

Mr Lim Horng Cherng, Chief Actuary & Appointed Actuary from Allianz General Insurance Malaysia, then provided valuable insights into actuarial exams and the professional journey.

Mr Lim emphasised the importance of technical knowledge, problem-solving skills, and effective communication, highlighting actuaries’ critical role during significant events like the COVID-19 pandemic and flash floods.

APU 4 (Charting Your Career Path, Insights into Actuarial Science and Beyond)

The session continued with Actuarial Analysts, Mr Tan Jie Shen and Ms Ong Min Ming, sharing their experiences within Allianz’s structured internship programme.

They highlighted the programme’s benefits in providing real-world exposure, industry experience, and potential career development opportunities.

During the Q&A session, the students gained insights into internship roles and criteria for application, emphasising the importance of communication skills in the actuarial profession. Ms Midah Ali from Allianz’s Human Resources Department engaged students with a fun Kahoot! quiz, introducing Allianz’s core values and mission.

Mr Kevin, University Partnership Specialist from Allianz Malaysia, concluded the event by presenting exciting opportunities within the Allianz Learn, Engage, Apprenticeship, Purpose (L.E.A.P.) programme.

To round it all off, the event was a resounding success, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of actuarial careers and internship opportunities at Allianz, whilst enriching students’ educational experience.
